Julien Champagne has developed a multidisciplinary practice that spans the fields of media arts and experimental music. His work explores the malleability of sound, landscape and everyday objects, while often referencing 20th century canonical artworks. By merging, hybridizing or hijacking technological components, natural features and artifacts from everyday life, he builds environments, images or sounds that tend to highlight the complementarity or contradiction between the materials he uses. Tensions between noise and silence, nature and technology, appearance and disappearance, presence and absence are thus frequently represented in his work. Champagne holds a Master's degree in Art History, and his research also focuses on the appropriation of the cinematographic medium in contemporary art. As a musician, he participates in various musical improvisation groups and occasionally collaborates with video artists and filmmakers to create a dialogue between sounds and moving images.

His work has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Some of his works are distributed by Vidéographe. He lives and works in Montreal/Tiohtiá:ke, Canada.
